How to use

Estimate read time first, then tune the pace for your audience

The Reading Time Calculator converts word count into a practical minutes-and-seconds estimate. Adjust words per minute to match casual reading, technical docs, or spoken delivery.

Step 1

Paste the draft

Add the full article, newsletter, documentation page, or script you want to measure. The calculator counts words as you edit.

Step 2

Choose a reading pace

Use around 200–250 WPM for general blogs, a slower pace for technical writing, and a faster pace for light content.

Step 3

Check speaking time too

If the text will be read aloud, set a speaking WPM near 130–160 to estimate presentation or voiceover length.

Step 4

Copy the summary

Copy the reading time, speaking time, and word count into your CMS, outline, or social caption before publishing.

Practical tips

  • Reading time is an estimate, not a guarantee. Images, code blocks, and dense charts can slow real readers.
  • Show rounded minutes on public posts, such as “5 min read,” for cleaner UX.
  • Lower the WPM for tutorials, legal text, and research summaries.
  • Use speaking time when planning webinars, podcasts, or video scripts.
  • Pair this tool with Text Analyzer or Readability Checker when you need deeper writing stats.
